Hi, I’m Alma Watkins, the founder and main writer behind barcode-society.com, a site dedicated to all things World of Warcraft. My story with WoW began back in 2006, during the Burning Crusade era, when a group of friends introduced me to Azeroth. What started as a casual curiosity quickly turned into a lifelong passion. I was drawn in by the game’s epic scope, its ever-evolving lore, and the complex dance of mechanics that made every dungeon run and raid a thrilling experience. I’ve been hooked ever since.
Gaming has always been more than just a pastime for me—it’s been a way of life. I grew up in a small town where getting lost in the fantastical worlds of video games was my escape. While my friends were outside playing sports, I was inside, leveling up characters and exploring new worlds. In many ways, World of Warcraft became the anchor of my gaming life, offering both a sense of adventure and a rich, global community that I’ve been fortunate enough to be part of for nearly two decades.
My professional life started in a different direction, though. I studied digital media and communications at university, which gave me the technical tools to understand the power of storytelling in various forms—whether it was through graphics, videos, or written content. For a while, I worked in marketing and graphic design, but my heart was always in gaming. So, in 2015, I took the leap and launched Barcode Society, combining my love for WoW with my background in content creation. The site was originally a small blog with raid tips and leveling guides, but over time, it grew into a more comprehensive resource for WoW players of all skill levels.
I’m particularly passionate about breaking down complex game mechanics into digestible pieces. Whether I’m writing detailed guides on class builds, strategies for mythic+ dungeons, or tips for new players, I always aim to make my content as helpful and accessible as possible. I know firsthand how overwhelming WoW can be for newcomers, and I want Barcode Society to be a place where both veterans and beginners feel welcome.
Beyond WoW, I’m a huge advocate for the gaming community. I believe that games like WoW aren’t just about gameplay; they’re about the connections you make along the way. Some of my closest friendships have come from guilds and raid groups. I even met my partner in-game during a particularly intense dungeon run, and we’ve been adventuring together ever since—both in Azeroth and in life.
When I’m not writing or raiding, I’m usually diving into the world of fantasy literature (I’m a huge Tolkien nerd), playing around with graphic design projects, or exploring new MMOs. I also love to attend gaming conventions and community events, where I get to meet fellow players and nerd out over the latest expansions, patches, or the occasional lore controversy.
Barcode Society has become a labor of love for me—a place where I can share my passion with others and, hopefully, inspire the same sense of wonder I felt when I first set foot in Azeroth. My ultimate goal is to create a space where WoW players can come to learn, connect, and grow together. Whether you’re here for the latest guides, expansion reviews, or just to reminisce about the good old days of Vanilla, I’m happy you’ve stopped by.
